Since April 2012, College communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick (CCNB) has also been managing the Eastern Canada Soil & Water Conservation Centre (ECSWCC). Thus the CCNB is participating more actively in agri-industry development through training, technology transfer and innovation. For its part, ECSWCC is now able to considerably expand its mission and directly access many resources that will enable it to better accomplish its goals.
In 1991, the Government of Canada created the Eastern Canada Soil & Water Conservation Centre to address the needs expressed by the agri-industry and various affiliated organizations. It is now located in CCNB's Centre for excellence in agricultural and biotechnological sciences in Grand-Falls.
Now more than ever, CCNB and ECSWCC hope to build strategic alliances with Atlantic Canada's agri-industry and its stakeholders, to support them as they face the many viability challenges that are presented by producing healthy foods responding to purchasers' and consumers' demands.Its mission

For over twenty years, ECSWCC has worked on soil and water conservation in Atlantic Canada. The agriculture industry and various government agencies recognize it as a leader in this field. In particular, the Centre promotes beneficial sustainable practices for managing cultivated land in order to control soil erosion and degradation problems. These practices include contour farming, strip cropping, crop rotation and water runoff and erosion control systems (see details at (www.ccse-swcc.ca). ECSWCC also has expertise in the management of crop nutrients and riparian buffer zones.Agroforestry
Agroforestry is the integration of trees into agricultural production systems. Over the years, the Centre has developed expertise in agroforestry, developing several sites for demonstrating agroforestry techniques in NB and PEI, including the management of windbreaks for blueberry farming on the Acadian Peninsula. The Centre also prepared a technical guide on agroforestry techniques and gave several training sessions for agricultural producers and extension officers in NB and PEI.Independent and confidential review of environmental farm plans
Since 2005, the Centre has evaluated the environmental farm plans (EFP) done by New Brunswick's agricultural producers. The EFP helps producers develop a practical plan for managing their farms in way that is a socially acceptable, economically viable and in compliance with environmental standards. The Centre, which has up-to-date agri-environmental expertise, maintains a high level of confidentiality, integrity and impartiality throughout the evaluation process. To date, it has evaluated and approved almost one thousand EFPs. The Centre has also coordinated the development of the EFP manuals (paper and electronic formats) and agri-environmental management tools for all the Atlantic provinces. The electronic version of the EFP caught the attention of many Canadian provinces, the United States and certain foreign countries.Field mapping, applied geomatics and precision agriculture
ECSWCC is able to perform field mapping of agricultural management practices using geographic information systems (GIS) in order to better manage the variability of farm land productivity. To do so, it uses applied geomatics and precision agriculture. Geomatics - the crossing of geography and computer science - is often used to find solutions to environmental problems. Geomatics combines all the tools and methods that help acquire, represent, analyze and integrate geographical data. Precision agriculture is an agricultural crop management system that is based on geomatics and serves to define, analyze and manage spatial and temporal variability in the fields in order to optimize their profitability and sustainability, while helping to protect the environment.
